Laura Graham’s career in higher education spans nearly 30 years, with 10 years spent teaching business communications, marketing, PR, and professional development. Her teaching is informed by her wealth of practical experience working in marketing and communications and she integrates this professional background with academic research in these areas, bringing theory and practice together. Graham’s dedication to her students led her to be voted Professor of the Year by the students of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS), the International Business Honor Society, at NCCU.

Areas of Specialty

Graham’s areas of specialty and current focus include career development, intercultural communication, verbal and nonverbal communication, and the role and implications of AI in higher education and communication. Her goal is to help today’s business students find and develop their authentic voices to open up employment and career advancement opportunities.

Professional Achievements

Apart from teaching, Graham serves as the Coordinator for Student Competitions at NCCU and is the Liaison between the School of Business and the University Honors Program (UHP).

She regularly attends conferences such as the Association for Business Communication (ABC) Annual International Conference, the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers (NCACE) Annual Conference, and the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Annual Conference to stay abreast of the latest research, practices, and developments.

She also works with companies such as the Clorox Company to provide internship opportunities and create course partnerships, and she often leads students on extracurricular excursions such as the HBCU Battle of the Brains national competition.

Publications

Graham is a contributor to print media, having written for Ad Age, been quoted in Forbes, and co-written a scholarly article for Business Communication Research and Practice (BCRP). Her submission for an innovative teaching practice, “Audience, Improv, and Persuasion: Teaching Audience Analysis With Gamification,” was included in a compilation of 11 such innovations for Business and Professional Communication Quarterly (BPCQ) which were presented at the ABC 88th Annual International Conference.
